About 15 police constables have been transferred to Kahawatte with effect from September 1 to be deployed in Kotakethana. The decision was by the IGP after discussions with local authorities and public representatives in the area during an inspection to Kahawatte on Thursday.

The IGP also directed the senior police officers in the area on keeping law and order in Kahawatte. In Kotakethana, four women were killed on two occasions recently. Suspects in connection with some cases have been arrested while the police are on the trail of others.

The Kuliyapitiya Pradeshiya Sabha chairman and six others have appeared before Kuliyapitiya police over an incident where two houses were attacked and damaged in Wewagamage in Ratmalewatte on August 31.The Kuliyapitiya Poice arrested them subsequently. Police reported that the PS chairman who was the chief suspect in the alleged attack and the six other were to be produce in the Kuliyapitiya Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

Pitigala Police are investigating the death of a 77-year-old woman who had died after falling into a public well in Mattaka, Pitigala on August 30. She has been identified as M. Hinninona. She is said to be absent-minded.

About 80 passengers escaped unhurt when an SLTB bus after it caught fire at Ice Peella on Badulla-Colombo main road in Haputale on Friday. A mechanical fault ignited the fire. The baggages of the passengers were completely destroyed in the fire. The Haputale police are investigating.

A suspect arrested by Kurunegala Police with 25Kgs of Amonia Nitrate, 2.5Kgs of explosive powder, two dynamites and 12 curls of fuse thread was remanded until today by the Kurunegala magistrate.

He was arrested at Kurunegala bus stand when he was about to travel to Anamaduwa with the seized explosives.

The information that devotees who thronged to pay homage to the Sacred Kapilawasthu Relics at Wariyapola Sri Sumangala Pirivena were injured during a stampede is totally false, said Wayamba Province Senior DIG Asoka Wijetilaka.

The Police had secured devotees’ safety during the exposition of the Relics in Wariyapola on Friday and Saturday. divotees did not get into any difficulty , he said. Officials of the Indian High Commission who were present at the venue also confirmed that the exposition proceeded smoothly, he added.

An elderly woman died of electrocution at her home in Weeraketiya on Saturday.

This had happened when the woman touched an electric wire which her son installed to obtain electricity illegally to the house. Weerakeitya Police are investigating.

Two youths aged 21 drowned while bathing at Periyanilaweli beach in Kalmunai on Saturday. K D A N Henric of Kalmunai and K Vinodkumar of Pandirippu died in the incident. Kalmunai Police are investigating.

Three suspects who allegedly attempted to get a ransom of Rs 100,000 from a person in Meegaspitiya after threatening him over the phone have been remanded until September 12 by Elpitiya magistrate.

Uragasmanhandiya Police arrested the suspects who threatened and demanded the ransom from the plaintiff on several occasions.

Wildlife officers of Walapane range together with Walapane Police have commenced an investigation into the death of a baby elephant they found dead on Kandy-Randenigala road near Kurundu Oya bridge in Walapane. The elephant is about four years, the Police said.

Six persons were hospitalized including the Wattegama Urban Council chairman after an explosion in a crematorium in Dum Oya, Yatawara on Saturday. Three were admitted to Kandy hospital while the others were taken to Wattegama Hospital. The explosion occurred when they were inspecting the crematorium which became inactive during a cremation. Wattegama Police are investigating.

Wattegama Police arrested three suspects who had allegedly stole a van worth Rs 2.8 million on Baseline road on August 12.

The stolen van was also been recovered. Police also unearthed several other crimes committed by the suspects in Kandana, Negombo and Ja Ela. The suspects were produced befor the Negombo magistrate yesterday.

Poddala police arrested two suspects while transporting 11.120 grammes of heroin in a three wheeler in Kalegana, Poddala on Saturday. Poddala police continuing investigations.

Kalutara Division Crime investigation branch and the Payagala police have arrested three suspects in connection with possessing heroin and also for a series of crimes committed in several areas in the recent past.

The Kalutara Crime Investigation branch on August 26, took into custody two suspects, residents of Beruwala with 40 grammes of heroin. They were later handed over to the ayagala police for further investigations.

Payagala police after obtaining detention orders from the Kalutara Magistrate's Court, interrogated the two suspect where they revealed information about the third suspect with whom they had carried out 13 robberies in Hikkaduwa,

Kalutara South, Payagala, Panadura, Beruwala, Aluthgama, Welipenna, Thebuwana and Kalutara North. The police also recovered part of the stolen property. Payagala police are continuing investigations.

The Navy, Fire Brigade and the China Bay police together doused a fire that erupted in a private cement factory in China Bay, Trincomalee. China Bay police are investigating to ascertain the cause of the ignition.

A 12-year-old girl, a student of Maharagama MMV, drowned while bathing and two other girls who got into difficulties, had been rescued in Habaraluwewa in Sevanagala.

The incident occurred when a group of students of Maharagama MMV who were returning after a cricket match had gone bathing in the Habaraluwewa in Sevanangala.

The body was sent to Sevanagala hospital morgue, police reported. The police request the relevant parties (guardians, teachers, parents ) not to involve students in dangerous activities while on trips and recreational journeys.

The 146th Police Day commemoration ceremony scheduled for today, has been postponed in line with the government's declaration of a National Mourning Day and as a mark of respect to the late Ramannya Nikaya Chief Prelate Most Venerable Weweldeniye Medalankara Thero, the Police Public Relations Unit announced. The Police Day commemoration ceremony, would be held tomorrow at all police

divisions and police stations islandwide. The main ceremony would be held tomorrow at 4pm at the Police Park grounds. The Chief Guest would be IGP N K Ilangakoon.
