Death of former Minister Wijayapala Mendis

Former Minister and senior politician Wijayapala Mendis passed away on Saturday at a private hospital in Colombo. He was 84. Wijayapala Mendis was involved in politics for over six decades.He later joined the People’s Alliance.

Prisoners Day celebrations

The International Prisoners Day that falls on September 12 will be observed in the Jaffna prison with prisoners partaking their meals with their kith and kin at the prison house.

The Prisons Superintendent Sanath Bandara revealed this to the press.

He said that the Prisoners Welfare Society will in addition to serving meals to prisoners and their kith and kin, present school equipment to their children.

This will be done to bring about psychological change in the minds of the prisoners, said the Prison Superintendent.

Boy knocked by van

A 14 year old boy who was crossing the road after buying gram from a gram seller was knocked down by a speeding Hiace van at Pirayanpathu in Pandaitherippu. The boy succumbed to his injuries while being taken to the hospital. The boy was identified as Sivanesan Kavitharan of Pirayanpattu.
