The United Kingdom's ‘Chevening’ Scholarship scheme is about
strengthening connections. It is also a wonderful opportunity for
talented Sri Lankans to study at world class universities in UK, British
High Commissioner to Sri Lanka and the Maldives John Rankin said at a
pre-departure briefing for Chevening Scholars for 2012/2013 at his
residence in Colombo on Tuesday.
The scheme funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth office is UK's most
prestigious scholarship for foreign graduate students.
Notable ‘Chevening’ scholars from Sri Lanka include Chief Justice Dr
Shirani Bandaranayake and Attorney General Palitha Fernando.
The three successful Chevening scholars this year are Nadeeka
Jayaweera and Srivante Gunewardena from Sri Lanka and Hussain Shameem
from the Maldives.
The High Commissioner addressing the gathering which included the
scholarship recipients, Chevening alumni and officials of the British
High Commission said the programme aims to enable current and future
leaders, decision makers and opinion makers to study in the UK and make
a positive contribution to their own countries upon their return. “In
addition to obtaining a post-graduate degree, the scholars return home
with experience of a different country and continent and a deeper
understanding of the UK's culture and values. We hope this will
contribute towards the strong and lasting bonds of friendship between
the UK and Sri Lanka and the Maldives,” he said.
The High Commissioner congratulated the scholarship recipients on
them being selected from a high competitive field of candidates. |
