Iron store, timber shop ablaze

The Fire Brigade and the Police doused two fire incidents that erupted in Athurugiriya and Wellampitiya. A store that collects iron for recycling, caught fire due to an electric spark in the building in Athurugiriya. Athurugiriya Police, CEB personnel and fire brigade of the Kotte Urban Council together doused the fire.

Wellampitiya Police and the Fire Brigade extinguished fire erupted in a timber shop at Halmulla. No injured was reported.


Elderly man knocked down by train

An elderly man was killed after being knocked down by train plying from Mount Lavinia to Aluthgama on Sunday. D C Fernando, 73, of Magala Kanda was walking along the rail track near the Yatan Yana culvert when he faced the mishap. The body was sent to Nagoda hospital for the post-mortem.


Digging treasure at home

Sevanagala Police acting on a tip off arrested three suspects while digging the floor of the living room at their house in Mahagama in search of treasure. They were produced in Embilipitiya Magistrate's Court.


Cannabis cultivation raided

STF officers attached to the Sooriyawewa camp on a tip off raided an half an acre of illegal cultivation of cannabis at Balaharuwa, Bandiwewa in Tanamalwila.

They seized 6,000 cannabis plants and arrested three suspects. The suspects were handed over to Tanamalwila Police for further investigations.

Buttala STF officers also seized 52 kgs of cannabis plants while they had been laid for drying at a chena in Weheragala, Kataragama.


Three held for illegal timber transport

Three suspects who were illegally transporting 31 logs of Satin Wood were arrested by Army personnel of Division 61 in Selvapuram on Sunday. The suspects and the illegally felled stock of timber were handed over to Mallavi Police for further legal procedures.


Three soldiers injured in explosion

Three soldiers were injured in an explosion while carrying out demining at Puthukkudiyiruppu on Sunday, Army media spokesman Brigadier Ruwan Wanigasuriya said. The soldiers were admitted to the main dressing room station at 68 division, he said. Meanwhile, an Army officer who was injured during parachute training in Ampara has been admitted to Ampara general hospital.


Five caught with heroin

Troops attached to Security Forces Headquarter South, 14 division, arrested five men with 9.770 grams of heroin in Mirihana, Boralesgamuwa and Moratuwa. They were handed over to respective police stations for further investigations.
