Watery grave for three
Three persons including a mother and a daughter drowned while bathing
in Narammala and Pothuvil on Monday.
A 40 year old woman and her daughter aged 14, drowned while bathing
in a pit of water in Diggalkanda in Panapitiya, Narammala. Lalitha
Indrani ( mother ) and I G Malshi Nisansala of Deekirinewa,
Panaptiyakanda died in the incident. A 19 year old youth was dragged
away by the currents at Ulla beach on the same day. He was on a picnic
to Ulla beach, Pothuvil with relations, Police said. The victim, M P
Ammanul Huck was a resident of Hunugala watte, Gampola.
His body was sent to the Moneragala hospital morgue for the
post-mortem.
Boy electrocuted
A 10 year old boy died of electrocution when he accidentally touched
an electric wire fallen on the ground at Meddegoda, Daulagala on Sunday.
Police said a coconut tree had fallen onto to the wire system which
cased the wire to land on the ground. Rasika Bandara of Kandessa died in
the incident.
Two arrested while transporting heroin
The Police Narcotics Bureau arrested two suspects while transporting
50.600 grams of heroin in a threewheeler near the Mohideen Jumma mosque
on St Joseph's Street, Colombo on Sunday.
The main suspect was a resident of Nawagampura. The threewheeler
driver was arrested for aiding him. The suspects were being questioned
under detention orders by the Maligakanda Magistrate.
Buddha statue selling attempt foiled
A person was arrested in Kandy while attempting to sell an
archaeologically significant Buddha statue to an offer of Rs 500,000.
The 18.5 cm tall statue belonging to the Kandyan era had been brought in
a car by the suspect.
The Kandy Anti-terrorist Operation Bureau carried out the raid. The
suspect, a resident of Suriyagoda, Muruthalawa was produced in Kandy
Magistrate's Court yesterday. |
