A series of awareness programmes for hotel staff on conservation of
water has been planned by the National Water Supply and Drainage Board
Public Relation Unit at the Cinnamon Grand Colombo yesterday.
This awareness programme coordinated by Mrs. Devika Bandara (Public
Relations Officer from NWSDB), Mrs. Tharika Goonathilake (Journalist and
Manager Marketing Communications and Sustainability of Cinnamon Grand)
and also supported by Mrs. Rushani Sasintha Jayakody (Cinnamon Grand).
Piyal Padmanatha Marketing Manager, Sarathchandra Mutubanda Senior
Public Relations, Mrs F.L. Kaleimathi Chemist from National Water Supply
and Drainage Board addressed the audience. As part of Cinnamon Grand
Colombo’s ongoing staff education and awareness on sustainability, the
hotel invited a team of personnel from the National Water Supply and
Drainage Board (NWSDB) to educate staff on the importance of reducing
water wastage.
Aptly titled “how to reduce your water bill at home and office” the
one hour session emphasized the importance of water conservation and
cultivating the habit of productive use. The target audience was from
areas in the hotel that account for high water usage, given the nature
of the operations concerned. These included staff from the Kitchen,
laundry, gardening and the angsana spa, where water consumption is high.
The interactive and insightful one-hour session, covered a range of
topics which included tips by the Water Board’s team of experts, on how
to save water in our day-to-day activities, water its historical, modern
day and future significance, water quality and purification, water wars
that could occur and most importantly water usage and wastage in the Sri
Lankan context, that result in the depletion of this precious resource
and money.
The NWSDB team also showed staff on how they can reduce their water
bill through more conscious consumption patterns! The awareness session
was attended by over 100 associates and was linked to the hotel’s green
forum, which aims at providing a platform of environmental learning for
the hotel’s staff.
