Brown sugar to consumers at reduced price

Internal Trade Minister Johnston Fernando on the directions of President Mahinda Rajapaksa has taken a decision to purchase locally produced brown sugar through Lanka Sathosa and provide it to the consumer at a concessionary price.

Accordingly, Lanka Sathosa purchased brown sugar produced by Sevanagala and Pelwatta sugar factories. When locally reduced sugar is purchased by Sathosa this will help strengthen the sugar industry while benefitting the consumers, the minister said.

He said, a decision on the quantum of sugar that will be purchased and the price of the sugar will be decided soon. He said Lanka Sathosa was established to support the local producers and to benefit the consumers as per the Mahinda Chainthana policy framework.
