Woman dies of jumbo attack
A 62 - year - old woman died after being attacked by an elephant in
Kotawehera yesterday morning.
Dingiri Amma of Galpotha, Monnekulama was attacked by the elephant
when she went to the forest near her home to collect firewood,
investigations revealed.
Asylum seekers arrested
A group of persons attempting to illegally migrate to Australia from
Chilaw was arrested by Chilaw Police yesterday afternoon.
The suspects, residents of Jaffna, Chavakachcheri, Mannar and Chilaw,
were produced before the Chilaw magistrate yesterday.
Chilaw Police are investigating.
Arrested for snatching child's chain
A suspect who snatched a gold chain worth Rs 24,000 from a two -year-
old girl was arrested by Seeduwa Police on Tuesday.
He was arrested following a complaint lodged at Seeduwa Police which
stated the gold necklace on a two -year- old girl was snatched on July
27 at Mukalangamuwa, Seeduwa.
The suspect was remanded until August 15 by the Negombo magistrate.
Arrested for tapping kovil till
Three suspects who broke a till in a kovil in Kantale and stole
money, were arrested while escaping with the stolen money yesterday.
They were arrested when police chased a motorcycle with three persons
tried to pass a checkpoint. The rider and the other two then abandoned
the motorcycle and attempted to escape. Police found three bags of notes
and coins on examining the motorcycle. The three suspects were arrested
later.
The suspects had told police the money was from the till of Ganadevi
Kovil, Kantale, which they broke open.
Elderly person dies in trap gun mishap
An elderly man who sustained injuries in a trap gun mishap, died at
Galgamuwa Hospital on Wednesday.
B R Wickckramasinghe, 62, of Mahananneriya faced the mishap while
walking near Pahala Wewa tank in Diulwewa.
Arrested with gajamuthu
A man and a woman were arrested with two pieces of gajamuthu in
Wattegama town on Thursday. The woman aged 40 is from Wattegama and the
man aged 45 is a resident of Ukuwela.They were produced before the
Teldeniya magistrate yesterday.
Woman arrested with tobacco powder at BIA
A woman flying from Chennai to Sri Lanka , who brought 19.262 kgs of
tobacco powder without a permit was arrested by Bandaranaike
International Airport Anti - Narcotics Bureau officers on Thursday.
Police handed over the 50 - year - old suspect, a resident of
Wellampitiya , Kolonnawa to customs officials.
Asylum seekers arrested in Wennappuwa
Wennapuwa Police arrested 13 persons residing at a house in Tummodara
planning to illegally migrate to Australia on Thursday.
The suspects aged between 19 and 40 are residents of Jaffna,
Mullaitivu, Pudukudiiruppu Police reported. Wennappuwa Police produced
the suspects before the Marawila magistrate yesterday.
Two arrested with cannabis
Nugegoda Divisional Anti - Corruption Unit arrested two suspects with
18.195 kgs of cannabis in Mirihana and Kaduwela on Thursday. The first
suspect, a resident of Julampitiya was arrested at Delkanda junction
with 5.110 kgs of cannabis while the other was arrested in Weliwita with
13.085 kgs of cannabis.
Mother in child cruelty case remanded
A woman who burnt her four - year - old son's leg and put chilli
powder in his eyes was released on Rs 50,000 surety by the Wellawaya
magistrate. The next hearing will be on October 11.
The incident occurred on Thursday and Wellawaya police arrested the
woman and produced her in court the same day.
Bell thieves remanded
Five suspects arrested for stealing a bell in a temple in Ambanpola
were remanded until August 13 by Mahawa magistrate. Another two suspects
were released on Rs 100,000 surety.
The suspects were caught and handed over to police by the villagers
while trying to remove the bell of Embulgiriya Rajamaha Viharaya.
Murder suspect on the run
Kolonna Police commenced a search operation to arrest a suspect in
connection with the murder of a 58 - year - old person.
