Illegal abortion facility raided, ‘doctor’, three women arrested

A so- called doctor and three women were arrested by the Kurunegala Crime Investigation Unit when they raided an illegal abortion clinic at Wellangolla Watte, Kurunegala on Thursday. The Police raided the place after obtaining a search warrant following a tip-off.

Investigations revealed the 38 - year - old suspect had claimed to be the doctor and carried out illegal abortions. The three women had already undergone abortions when the Police arrested them.

The women, residents of Dodamgaslanda and Udubaddawa, were hospitalised after producing before the Kurunegala Judicial Medical Officer. Police seized medical tools and accessories the suspect used to carry out abortions. Police also found a a hand grenade in his car.

The suspect was remanded until August 14 by the Kurunegala magistrate.

Kurunegala Police are investigating.
