India through Sri Lankan Eyes
A photographic exhibition titled "India Through Sri Lankan Eyes" will
be held at the J.D.A. Perera Gallery, No. 46, Horton Place, Colombo - 7
from August 10-12.
This will also mark the forthcoming exposition of Sacred Kapilavasthu
Relies in Sri Lanka Tue exhibition has been jointly organized in
partnership with the Photographic Society of Sri Lanka (PSSL), Colombo.
"India through Sri Lankan Eyes", exhibition is curated by Immediate
Past President of the Photographic Society of Sri Lanka Mithra Weerakone.
Annual Golden Chariot festival
The annual Golden Chariot festival of the Arulmihu Sivasubramaniya
Swamy Kovil, Colombo 02, will be held on August 11.
The main Golden Chariot procession will commence at 6.30 a.m, said
Chairman Board of the Trustees of Arulmihu Sivasubramaniya Kovil Thiru
Nadesan in a release.
Public talk
Samudra de Soyza will deliver a public talk in English on
'Suitability for Admonition' at the meeting of the Servants of the
Buddha Society on August 11 at 4.30 om at the Maithree Hall, Lauries
Road, Bambalapitiya.
Lecture
Dr D S A Wijesundara, the Director General of the Botanical Gardens,
Peradeniya will give a lecture on the history of the botanical gardens
in Sri Lanka and speak on the many floral species including the rare
species found only in Sri Lanka.
The illustrated lecture under the auspicious of the Wildlife and
Nature Protection Society, will be held on Thursday the 16th August 2012
at 6.00 pm. The venue will be the institution of Engineers (Wimalasurendra
Auditorium) No. 120/15, Vidya Mawatha, off Wijerama Mawatha, (BMICH end)
Colombo 07. The lecture is open to the public and entrance is free.

Public lecture
The Royal Asiatic Society will hold a public lecture on "The Buddhist
influence on Samuel Beckett, James Joyce and other English writers" by
Adjunct Professor at Stevenson University, USA, formerly Harvard
University's Divinity School Prof. Stuart Cooning.
The lecture will be held on at the Mahaveli Centre, 96 Ananda
Coomaraswamy Mawatha, Colombo on August 14, at 5 p. m.
Over 20,000 CAA raids in seven months
The Consumer Affairs Authority conducted 20,070 raids on errant
traders during the first seven months of this year and raked in Rs 60
million as fines to state coffers after legal action against them for
various malpractices which flouted the Consumer Protection Act said
Co-operatives and Internal Trade Minister Johnston Fernando.
The minister in a press release said the number of raids conducted
district wise were Colombo 2529, Kandy 2170, Gampaha 1757, Kurunegala
1,382, Matale 1,234 and Puttalam 1,002.
Malpractices committed by errant traders including over pricing
goods, failure to issue warranty cards, failure to indicate the prices
of goods advertised in newspapers, hoarding and sale of outdated goods.
Arsonists on the loose in Matale

Over 1,000 acres of forest reservation in the Matale district, have
been burnt by unknown persons, during the current dry season, Forest
Conservation Officials said.
About 50 acres of the Godaulpotha forest reservation of the
Hibiliyakada area in Laggala were set on fire and destroyed recently.
The officials said such incidents have increased in the district,
because of poachers and illegal timber fellers.
Canal facing pollution

The Karaivahu canal crossing the Sainthamaruthu Divisional
Secretariat area in Kalmunai is facing environmental pollution, causing
difficulties to thousands of families in the area.
According to the public, some dwellers along the channel bunds have
diverted the waste of toilets and other places. Parts of animal
carcasses from abattoirs are also directed to the canal.
World Aborigines Day
World Aborigines Day will be celebrated in Dambana, Mahiyanganaya
today.
Cultural Affairs and Arts Minister T B Ekanayaka will be the chief
guest.
Uva Governor C Nanda Mathew, Chief Minister Shasheendra Rajapaksha
and National Heritage Minister Jagath Balasuriya will also participate.
Mahiyanganaya Esala Festival
The first ceremony of the annual Esala perahera of Mahiyanganaya will
be held on August 17.
The procession will traverse through the roads in the temple premises
daily until August 27. The main perahera days will be held from August
27 to 31.
The peraheras will traverse through the streets of the Pujaa Nagaraya
and the Mahiyanganaya town from August 27 to 31.
The Mahiyanganaya Esala festival will end with the water cutting
ceremony on September 1.
Seenigama kovil festival
The 45th annual festival of the sea kovil of Seenigama, Hikkaduwa
will begin today at 1.30 pm. The festival will end on August 14.
Medical Crossword draw and seminar
Medical crossword draw No. 53 will be held tomorrow, as part of a

Trishaw driver held for attacking bhikkus

A three-wheeler driver who allegedly assaulted two samanera bhikkus
of a temple at Paraduwa, Akuressa was taken into custody at Palatuwa by
Matara Police. The two samanera bhikkus were assaulted while on their
way to back to temple in another three wheeler, after paying homage to
the Sri Vishnu Devalaya Devinuwara, Police said. Suspect was produced
before magistrate’s court, matara.

A Police constable who was on his way home on a motorcycle collided
with a lorry. The injured was rushed to hospital where he died. R A
