Man hacked to death

Galenbindunuwewa Police commenced a search operation to arrest a suspect who has fled the area after allegedly hacking a person to death at Yakalla on Tuesday.

Forty four-year-old K A Abeywickrama of Yakalla died in the incident. The body was handed over to his relations after the postmortem.


Man dies in jumbo attack

A 62-year-old man died on admission to Welikanda hospital following a jumbo attack on Wednesday.

The victim, A M Piyadasa of Sinhapura, was attacked by a wild elephant while walking along Mahawelithenna road.


Child drowns at sea

A seven-year-old child drowned while bathing at Uswetakeyyawa beach in Pamunugama on Wednesday.

Two other boys, also dragged away by currents, were saved by their parents. Navy divers later found the victim, Sandaru Prabhasara Govinna of Athurugiriya and rushed him to Pamunugama hospital where his death was confirmed.

Pamunugama Police are investigating.


Body found

Ja Ela Police found a body of a man floating on Dadugama canal in Ja Ela on Wednesday.

The deceased, 5'6" tall, appeared to be of 48 to 50 years. He was wearing a black dotted shirt. Two scars due to cut injuries were visible on his right elbow, Police said.

Ja Ela Police seek public assistance to ascertain his identity.


Couple netted with ammo

A man and a woman were arrested by the Akuressa Police on Wednesday with a foreign made hand grenade, two locally made shot guns, T 56 bullets and a commando knife at Wilpita in Kurunduwatte.

The suspects, residents of Kekanadura and Wilpita were produced before the Matara magistrate yesterday.


Man nabbed with cannabis

A man was arrested at Hingurakkgoda bus station with nearly 3 kgs of cannabis in his possession by the Hingurakkgoda Police on Wednesday.

He was remanded until August 15 when produced before the Hingurakkgoda magistrate.


Husband assaulted to death by wife

A woman was arrested by the Vavuniya Police for allegedly assaulting her husband to death on Sunday night at their home in Poonthottam.

Investigations revealed that the husband, who was under the influence of alcohol, had molested the suspect who in turn assaulted and choked his neck. Vavuniya Police are investigating.


Chain snatchers remanded

Two persons who snatched gold chains and other valuables from women were arrested by the Vadukkodei Police on Monday.

Police said the suspects had reached the women on motorcycles while they were walking along roads, snatched their gold chains and stole other valuables from their handbags.

Police seized some of the snatched jewellery and 22 pawing receipts from their possession.

The suspects were remanded until August 7 by the Mallakam magistrate.
