School van runs over four-yr-old

K A Shashini Dilshani, a Montessori student aged 4, of Vithanagoda, Welipenna was knocked down in front of her home by the school van she had been travelling in. She succumbed to her injuries on the way to hospital.

*Shashini had got down from the school van and proceeded to her home from the front of the vehicle. The driver of the van failed to see her and found her under the vehicle.

*Shashini's mother P V Siriyani was not in a position to give details of the accident.

Her father K L Neel Rohana said, “Shashini attracted all in the village. She would pluck flowers and engage in religious activities. It is a good lesson for all parents who send their children to school in school vans. The driver said my daughter had dropped something on the ground and bent down to pick it up, and that he had not seen her. However drivers should be more careful when on duty.”

*The driver of the school van, was produced at the Matugama Court by the Welipenna Police.

He was remanded till August 14 by the Matugama Additional Magistrate.
