Renovation of Magalla tank under President’s patronage
The renovation of the Magalla tank in Nikaweratiya area began on
Friday under the patronage of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
The renovation of the tank is expected to bring relief to thousands
of people in the Nikaweratiya area currently undergoing an extended
spell of drought.
The tank built by King Mahasen has not been properly renovated since
1943 and the present effort is expected to enhance its water retaining
and distribution capacity significantly.
The President on the occasion also took part in the dredging of the
tank and the Ridee Madi canal which brings water to the tank, by
starting the relevant machineries.
Earlier in the day, addressing the Kurunegala District Development
Committee meeting, President Rajapaksa advised officials to renovate
tanks across the country to ensure adequate water for cultivations. |
