Ending the war is one of its landmark improvements in the quality of
the country's political situation. Therefore the people will take into
account the macro picture before them in casting their vote during
upcoming Provincial Council Elections, National Languages and Social
Integration Minister Vasudeva Nanayakkara told the ' Daily News '
yesterday.
According to Minister Nanayakkara as far as his area (Sabaragamuwa
Province)is concerned, the tea and rubber smallholders and the small
scale tea and rubber cultivators get reasonable prices for their
products. Therefore they are getting a reasonable income. They also feel
the pinch of the cost of living from time to time but their income is
reasonably good at present.
The cinnamon peelers too have a good income. Nanayakkara stated that
he doubts the Opposition's capability of winning the upcoming PC
elections. 'I do not think that the Opposition is capable of winning the
elections or forming a common Opposition or a coalition. The Opposition,
especially its leadership is weak.
'There are persons, political parties etc which have differences with
the government's and therefore oppose the government.
'My brother is only involved in a movement that aims at correcting
certain things in connection with the agricultural sector because he
says that he believes certain things in the agricultural sector are
being neglected and ignored.
'I do not think that he is connected with any politically motivated
persons, parties or groups', Minister Nanayakkara added.
