President orders probe on Mannar incident

President Mahinda Rajapaksa has ordered the IGP to instruct the CID to probe the Mannar incident, Presidential Spokesman and International Affairs Advisor Bandula Jayasekera said yesterday.


UC member, a burglar

A U.C. Member of Tangalle was fined Rs. 7500 in the Magistrate’s court for stealing electrical appliances worth Rs. 24,500 from a house at Medaketiya in Tangalle.

He had entered the house by breaking open the front door.


Request for inquiry

Parents of students of a Junior School in Rideegama have petitioned the Zonal Education Director Ibbagamuwa, requesting to hold an inquiry into the behaviour of two teachers of the school who were under the influence of alcohol during a Bakthi Gee program of the school.


 

Stall owner in hot water

A stall owner at the Galenbindunuwewa Sathipola was taken into custody by Anuradhapura Food and Drug Control officers on Thursday for keeping an unhygienic outdated stock of buns for sale at the stall. He was produced before the Anuradhapura Chief Magistrate and fined Rs 5,000.


Woman fined for power piracy

A woman of Akuressa, who pleaded guilty to tapping power illegally by manipulating an electricity meter was fined Rs 174,357 by Matara Additional Magistrate Dulani Amarasinha.


Commemorative ceremony

The 19th anniversary of Officer Cadet Intakes 40, 40A, SC5 and SC5A falls today. Eighteen Armed personnel attached to these intakes, including Lt Colonel Sumith Perera RWP are to be commemorated today. The memorial ceremony will be held at the Sri Lanka Military Academy, Diyatalawa today.

A Bodhi pooja will also be held at Yahalabedda Temple to remember war heroes.

Officers will offer heel dana to the Maha Sanga tomorrow morning. Conference

The Lakshman Kadirgamar Institute for International Relations and Strategic Studies (LKIIRSS) will hold a National Conference in Reconciliation on the Role of Women in Reconciliation on July 23 at 2:00 pm.


Kalai Vizha, Neethi Murasu launch

Kalai Vizha and the launching of Neethi Murasu 2012 will be held today at 3pm at Saraswathy Hall, Bambalapitiya.

It is organised by the Law Students' Thamil Mantram of the Sri Lanka law College.

Appeal Court President Justice S Sri Skandarajah will be the Chief Guest.


Picture Pissa launch

Journalist and cinema critique Sunil Mihindukula's Picture Pissa column publication will be launched at a ceremony at Lake House on July 25 at 10am. Media Centre for National Security Director General Lakshman Hulugalle will be the Chief Guest.

Actor and cinema director Jackson Anthony will deliver a special lecture on 'Cinema column literature.'

A seminar for students sitting the Grade 5 scholarship examination jointly organised by the Sri Narada Foundation and the Ware House Project will be held at the Ware House Auditorium on July 21 from 9am to noon.

A guest lecture on Many languages, one literature by Indian writer, publisher and festival director Namita Gokhale will be held on July 23 at 11am at the Department of the Sinhala Auditorium, Faculty of Arts, Colombo University (entrance from Reid Avenue). Awards presentation

Sansada Group, the Past Pupil's Association of Dharmapala Vidyalaya, Pannipitiya, will hold a Paduru sajjaya at the school basketball court today 21 at 7.30 pm.


Coastguard saves siblings

Coastguard life savers rescued three brothers in difficulty while bathing at Galle Face on Tuesday evening.

D M Dileep Kumara, DM Imalka and DM Dilan from Kalukale, Polonnaruwa were bathing at Galle Face when one of them was dragged away by a strong current. The two brothers seeing their sibling struggling, attempted to rescue him and were unsuccessful.

Two life savers took all three brothers ashore safely.
