More policemen on duty for Kataragama Perahera

Over 1,500 police officers and an extra contingent of traffic police
officers have been deployed for special duties at the annual Esala Maha
Perahera of Kataragama Devala, Police Media Spokesman SP Ajith Rohana
said.
The traditional religious pageant which commenced on Thursday in
Kataragama will conclude on August 2 with the water cutting ceremony.
“Over 500 police personnel in civvies have been deployed to nab
possible pick pockets and chain snatchers and provide more security to
the massive crowds of devotees that throng Kataragama during the festive
season, “SP Rohana said.
The Police Public Relations Unit requests public to use only the
following designated parks to station their vehicles. Raum Kadaya near
Presidents College, Illanaga Area near Ranjith Madduma Bandara Grounds,
opposite Water Supply Board at Raja Mawatha, Gam Udawa Bangala Handiya,
New road near Detagamuwa tank, opposite the Gangarama and opposite
Muslim Pilgrims’ rest. Police also request the public to bathe in tanks
only where there are Police or Navy life savers on duty.
The public should also take note of bathing at protected bathing
sites as there is a risk of crocodile attacks in the Menik Ganga. The
Kataragama sacred place and the surroundings has been declared a non-
alcoholic area by the Monaragala District Secretary. Public must refrain
from consuming liquor or any other narcotic. A special anti narcotics
team has been deployed to arrest the offenders.
The PPR Unit also requests the public to be extra cautious about
their wallets and valuables. It is best if parents keep a card in their
children’s pockets with their telephone number and address written on
