Special seminar on crime

The Government Information Department and Media Centre for National Security have jointly organised a special seminar on crime, abuses and National Security on July 23 at 9.30 am at the Government Information Department Auditorium. The main lecture will be conducted by Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.

The main objective of organising the seminar is to make the public aware about present crimes and abuses.


Look out for Ramazan moon

The moonsighting conference will be held today after Magrib under the auspices of the Colombo Grand Mosque, the Colombo Grand Mosque said in a release yesterday.

The release also requested Muslims to look out for the new moon from 6.30pm and inform on 0115234044, 0112432110 or 0777366099 with reliable evidence and witness if the new moon is sighted.


former ANCL employee’s sister dies

Fawzul Aman (Zahira) Sister of ex-ANCL employee M.H.A. Hanifa passed away yesterday.

Janaza will take place today at 9.00 a.m at Kuppiyawatte Muslim Burial Grounds, Colombo 9. Remains are lying at No. 46, Dr. E.A. Cooray Mawatha, Wellawatte, Colombo 06.

(Janaza prayers will take place 10.00 a.m at Nawala Jumma Mosque, Rajagiriya).


Lionel Kuruppu dies

Lionel Kuruppu (all-island JP) of Samudrarama Road, Wadduwa, retired Director of Education, a social and religious worker and philanthropist in the area died following a brief illness.

He leaves his wife Nanda Kuruppu (retired school teacher), son Kaushalya Kuruppu (Chief Engineer, Water Resources Board), daughter Thanujie Kuruppu Wijenayake (Hatton National Bank, Bandaragama), daughter-in-law Manjula Kuruppu (Visakha Vidyalaya) and son-in-law Buddhi Wijenayake (Aitken Spence).

Cremation at Wadduwa Public Cemetery on Saturday July 21 at 5 pm.


 

Ramazan dates exempted from Customs duties

President Mahinda Rajapaksa granted approval to exempt dates imported for the Ramazan season from Customs duties, the Finance and Planning Ministry said in a release yesterday.

Five hundred metric tons of dates imported to be distributed among among Muslims during the Ramazan season are to be exempted from Customs duties as a result, the release said.


Get-together

A get-together of the 1992 batch of Gampaha Bandaranaike College will be held at the school main hall on Sunday at 8.30am. Past students admitted to Grade 6 in 1985 and sat for the A-L examination in 1992, or the O-L examination in 1989 are invited.


Cookery demonstration

A cookery demonstration organised by the Sri Lanka Ex-Army Women's Association will be held at the Ex-Servicemens' Institute at Bristol Street, Colombo tomorrow from 9am.
