UGC chairman urged to show cause

The Supreme Court yesterday issued notice returnable on July 23 on University Grants Commission (UGC) chairman Prof Gamini Samaranayake to show cause why contempt proceedings should not be instituted against him for not taking steps to comply with the June 25 court judgment ordering to recalculate the z score of the 2011 GCE A-L in accordance with the UGC Act.

The Bench comprised Chief Justices Shirani Bandaranayake, K Sri Pavan and Gamini Ameratunge. Earlier, the Supreme Court declared the z score issued in respect of the GCE A-L last year, under the old and new syllabuses separately, is null and void. The Fundamental Rights application was filed by students and a teachers union against last year's Z score system.
