Four people, including a man in robes, were arrested with two pieces of gajamuthu in Kandy on Sunday.

Kandy crime investigations unit, on a tip off, arrested three of the suspects when they checked a three-wheeler at Balana with one gajamuthu.

Interrogation led to the arrest of another suspect with the second gajamuthu. The suspects produced before the Kandy magistrate was released on Rs 15,000 cash bail and Rs 100,000 personal bail. The next hearing is on July 18.


Patient falls from third floor

A patient who fell from the third floor of the Badulla general hospital, succumbed to injuries on Monday. Police said 40-year-old T Kanagaraj of Neluwa, who was a patient at no 4 ward, had jumped out from the third floor through a ventilation box. Five hours later he had died at ward 9.


Worker dies in pit

A worker seriously injured after falling into a pit in a metal crusher, succumbed to injuries on admission to the Badulla hospital. Forty nine-year-old G M Wimalasiri had slipped and fallen in the pit. Badulla Police are investigating.


CID remands monk

The monk arrested by the CID in connection with aiding several crimes and accommodating suspects was remanded until July 17 by the Balapitiya magistrate.

The monk, who is the chief incumbent of a temple in Bandarigoda, Induruwa, was also charged for possessing firearms and dud notes. The CID is investigating.


Three netted for rape

Three suspects who allegedly raped a 29-year-old woman and two girls aged 11 and 14 were arrested by the Eppawala, Kurunegala and Matale Police following complaints. Police media spokesperson SP Ajith Rohana said a 36-year-old man from Eppawala was arrested for raping an 11-year-old girl in Galwadugama, Eppawala.

The other suspect was arrested in Wilgodawatte, Kurunegala. Police said the suspect had entered a house in the area and raped a 29-year-old woman after threatening her pointing a knife. Meanwhile, Matale Police took into custody a 21-year-old man for raping a 14-year-old girl at her home in Ukuwela. The suspect is a neighbour of the victim, Police said. The suspects were produced before magistrates yesterday.


Hospital staffer steals gold chain

Kurunegala Police arrested a woman employed at the Kurunegala hospital for stealing a Rs 150,000 worth gold chain from another woman at the hospital. Acting on a complaint made by the staffer who lost the chain, Police arrested the 44-year-old woman and found the stolen chain in her possession.

She was produced before the Kurunegala magistrate yesterday.
