‘Cartoonists can help build disciplined society’

‘Cartoons can be described as a medium which can provide a great message to society through humour and entertainment.

‘Therefore the contribution of cartoonists is expected towards building a disciplined society by way of providing creations that will set an example to the future generation, said President Mahinda Rajapaksa when he met a group of cartoonists at Temple Trees yesterday morning.

President Rajapaksa said cartoonists are a group of people who see through society by their creations. Therefore it was their duty to identify the needs of society and utilize their creations towards facilitating social progress. Some of the cartoonists present pointed out that major factors which contributed towards the high incidence of crime were Internet activities and indecent websites. Negligence on the part of parents also contributed towards children being led astray.

Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga, Secretary to the Treasury Dr P B Jayasundera and Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa were also present.
