Frozen beauty

Wild animals are our relatives and the Nature is our life - is the
theme and the slogan of the Young Zoologists Association of Sri Lanka.
The Young Zoologists Association of Sri Lanka was founded in 1972 and
they strived hard to protect the Nature and the Wildlife in Sri Lanka.
The Young Zoologists Association conducts arts, paintings and
photography classes at the National Zoological Gardens, Dehiwala totally
tree of charge. Volunteerism is the main course of their success. No one
works for money. Even the instructors of the classes also work and serve
voluntarily. Annually this organisation conducts a valuable welfare
campaign to remove the plastic and ploythine bags dumped by the pilgrims
who visit Sripada holy region.
It is reported that the organisation had collected 620 kg of
polythene bags and plastic empty bottles from the Sripada region this
year. The young Zoologists Association had conducted art and
photographic exhibitions for last 19 years. The creations of the art and
photographic classes conducted by the Association are being exhibited at
the exhibition.
The 2012 exhibition was held recently at the National Art Gallery,
Colombo 7. Around 200 photographs and 200 paintings were included at the
exhibition. There were two sectors in the paintings exhibition. They are
under 12 and over 12.
"Wild Animal Relatives" and "Nature is Our Soul" are the themes of
the exhibition. The Director General of the National Zoological Gardens
Bhaswara Senanka Gunaratne declared open the exhibition.

Handicrafts galore
A handicrafts exhibition was held at the Sanhinda Elders Home in
celebrating its 10th Anniversary on June 23. The exhibition was opened
by Ven Maduluwawe Sobitha Thera as Chief Guest after the preaching
delivered by Ven. Pannala Gnanaloka Thera.
Dr Soma Edirisinghe, Chairperson of the Elders Home organized this
occasion enabling guests to see and buy Patch work and wooden items,
cross stitch designs, paintings, garments and many more things done by
the inmates of this home. Money collected from sales were given to the
respective inmates who provided the items.

Book discussions
Award-winning author Anurasiri Hettige's teenage novel 'Kolamba
Lamai' and Ajith Nishantha's latest poetry collections will be discussed
on July 13 and 20 respectively at Sri Lanka Press Council auditorium
(opposite Castle hospital) at 4 pm.
Marambari musical show

Renowned vocalist and musician Edward Jayakody's solo musical show
Marambari will be held at the Ananda Vidyalaya Kularatne hall on July 13
at 3 pm and 6.30 pm. He will be singing the best songs he has ever sung
in his career span of 35 years.
Edward who is also a student of Maestro Amaradeva and Sanath
Nandasiri was exposed to both folk and western music and later in life
he studied North Indian Classical music too.
Edward received Swarna Sanka Award for the best singer for singing
the theme song of Roy de Silva's film 'Gedara Budun Amma' in 1988.
Painting and sculpture exhibition
Alliance française de Kandy will hold an exhibition of works
(paintings and sculptures) by Dr. H.A. Karunaratne - "The Father of Sri
Lankan Abstract Art in Retrospect" from July 20 to 30.
This event is presented by Mr and Mrs Shamil Pieris from selected
works by the Artist in their collection.
The Chief Guest at the Opening Ceremony on July 20 at 7pm will be
Assistant High Commissioner of India in Kandy A. Natarajan.
DrKarunaratne is one of the most senior artists in the field of
Visual Arts in Sri Lanka. Karunaratne's formal academic art education
begins at Govt. College of Fine Arts. In the years of 1952-1958, he had
trained under great art masters J. D. A. Perera, David Paynter, Stanley
Abeysinghe...
Swarnamali Balika Vidyalaya, Kandy, and Lexicon International School
collaborated together to present a dance item that won the first place
in the group dance category at the Inter school music and dance
competition recently. The event was won under the guidance of Swarnamali
Balika Vidyalaya principal Panipa Damunupola and its dance teachers Hema
Samarakoon and Kanishka Samarasundara.
