CR-Police clash on July 6
The confrontation between the youthful CR and FC and the experienced
Police Sports Club at Longden Place on July 6 (Friday) is the pick of
this week's matches in the Dialog 'A' Division League Rugby Tournament.
The Policemen who suffered three successive defeats at the hands of
Havelocks (10-33), Navy (18-33) and Kandy SC (0-25) scored a morale
boosting 12-10 win over Up Country Lions and are in a buoyant mood and
will go flat out to overcome the Red Shirts and register their second
successive victory.
The Red Shirts who began the season with two successive wins over
Army (22-20) and Air Force (44-27) then suffered a humiliating defeat at
the hands of traditional rivals Havelocks SC (7-38) and will have to
come up with a much better display on Friday if they are to get the
better of the Policemen.
CR and FC have the services of two New Zealanders - Luke Muggeridge
and Palaksala Molele but their youngsters have failed to live up to
expectations and players of the calibre of Nipuna Devinda, Hafiz Adahan,
Chilanka Samaraweera, Ranjula Perera and Shehan Pathirana will have the
tough task of matching up to the seasoned Police forwards - Nishantha
Welagedera, Sivadason, Chammika Thushara, Dinesh Kumara, T D Seneviratne
and skipper Romesh Archarige if they are to emerge victorious and stay
in contention for the Dialog 'A' Division League title. The Policemen
have also in their ranks two top foreigners - fly half Sam Olele and
centre Fijian Roko who should test the CR defence to the hilt on Friday.
