Norwegian embassy support libraries

The Norwegian embassy signed a contract with the Culture and the Arts Ministry to support libraries in cultural centres via the Central Cultural Fund.

The embassy’s grant is to upgrade libraries and provide mobile libraries in the North and East.

“We strongly believe in the value of reading and the importance of free access to quality books.

By upgrading the libraries in the cultural centres, people will get the opportunity to read books written on various subjects in different languages, selected by a representative committee.

It is particularly encouraging that a large number of women are reading books from these libraries.

The project also helps and encourages Sri Lankan writers as the Culture and the Arts Ministry purchases their books for the libraries,” Norwegian ambassador Hilde Haraldstad said.

The embassy began assisting libraries in the cultural centres in Sri Lanka in 2004.

The embassy granted over Rs 19 million for this.
