Thilanga represents PGA, at ATT declaration

The PGA (Parliamentarians for Global Action) has invited Thilanga Sumathipala MP to participate in the UN Conference on Arms Trade Treaty Declaration, at the UN Headquarters, New York, from July 2 to 7.

After the resolution on an Arms Trade Treaty by UN General Assembly in 2006, it requested countries to submit their views on the 2007 report of the Secretary – General.

The general assembly decided to convene a Conference on Arms Trade Treaty in 2012 “to elaborate a legally binding instrument on the highest possible common international standards for the transfer of conventional arms”.

It presented the 'Control Arms Global Parliamentarian Declaration on Arms Trade Treaty' launched at the 33rd Annual Forum of PGA in Colombo Sri Lanka in November 2011, to UNSG Ban Ki-moon on July 3, by President H.V. Ross Robertson with more than 1,600 signatures of the legislators.

Thilanga Sumathipala (MP) participated in the 3rd and 4th Preparatory Committees in July 2011 and February, 2012, representing Sri Lanka. He articulated about ATT with a private member motion in the Parliament of Sri Lanka.
