A potential gem market has developed in Diyatalawa town with the finding of gem veins in the area around Diyatalawa by miners.

People engaged in the mining industry said they have been able to get a good price for gems found by them from gem merchants who frequent Diyatalawa from far off places such as Balangoda, Ratnapura, Elahera, Polonnaruwa, Okkampitiya and Matale following the gem rush.
