Saliya, Jayalath and Symons win over 60 event
The Sri Lanka Army inter-regiment masters cycling championship was
held around the Viharamahadevi Park circuit.
The meet started at 2 pm and concluded at 6.30 pm. The chief guest
was Major General Sudantha Weerasinghe.
There were five categories of events:
1. Racing (open) - 30 laps (all regiments).
2. Standard (open) - 30 laps (all regiments).
3. Women (open) - 10 laps (all regiments).
4. Disabled (open) - 10 laps (all regiments).
5. Masters (open) - five laps (retired).
Thousands had gathered around the Viharamahadevi Park circuit to
watch the event.
The Masters Ex-servicemen's results are as follows:
The event started with over 45 to 50 years events.
The results of the over 60 years events is as follows:
1st place: Saliya Weerakkody (SLA Ordinance Corps). 2nd place: W S
Jayalath (SL Army Work Services Corps). 3rd place: P Anthony Symons (Sri
Lanka Electrical and Mechanical Engineer Corps).
Saliya Weerakkody and W S Jayalath had brought honour to the Army in
1980s, winning most of the open events, bringing credit to the SL Army
(now retired).
Anthony Symons captained the Army cycling team from 1969 to 1978,
winning many open events bringing credit to the SL Army.
In 1978 he was awarded Army Colours.
In 2012 felicitating the Ex-servicemen in all sports he was awarded
medal and certificate in honour of gaining victories and bringing credit
to SL Army during 1969-1978.
This occasion was held in Colombo.
The chief guest was the Army Commander Lt Gen Jagath Jayasuriya. |
