NTC road safety workshops in North
The National Transport Commission(NTC) conducted workshops on road
safety in several areas in the North during the weekend for drivers,
conductors and bus owners.
Private Transport Services Minister C.B.Ratnayake speaking to the
'Daily News' from Kilinochchi yesterday said that it was important to
educate all on road safety and relevant matters with the North becoming
a busy hub due to the rapid social and economic development taking place
in the province since the end of conflict. "The workshops were conducted
in the Kilinochchi and Mulaitivu districts with large crowds
participating," NTC Chairman Roshan Gunewardene said.
Gunewardene said safety lectures were delivered and demonstrations
conducted on safe driving, road safety, traffic rules and regulations,
handling of pedestrians, ensuring safety of children, technical know how
etc.
Drivers and conductors who participated were given a special
Identification card. The special ID makes them eligible to work in any
part of the country. The NTC Chairman also said they had undertaken to
renovate the Mullaitivu bus stand at a cost of Rs.100 million heeding to
a request made by MP Namal Rajapaksa. The NTC is also planning to
renovate Kilinochchi Bus stand. During their programmes in the North,
the NTC also donated 100 bicycles to needy schoolchildren of the area.
