Milch cow goes to slaughter house

Policemen attached to the crime branch, of the Avissawella Police while on duty at Kahanawita on the Dehiowita-Deraniyagala road, seized a lorry with a milch cow and arrested two suspects. When questioned, it was found that the cow was one of several cows imported from New Zealand to be distributed among the poor families.

Livestock and Rural Community Deputy Minister H R Mithrapala, had distributed a few cows among families in the Deraniyagala area and the cow found in the seized lorry was one such, bought by two men for slaughter. The two men, along with the cow and the lorry were produced before the Avissawella Chief Magistrate D H A Seneviratne, who imposed a fine of Rs 33,000 each and ordered the cow to be released in the Kosgama Animal Farm.

OIC Crimes, SI Rajaratne with a police team conducted the raid.
