Use water sparingly - NWS & DB

The National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWS and DB) would be forced to impose restrictions on water supply, if there is insufficient rain in the coming weeks, NWS and DB chairman Karunasena Hettiarachchi told the Daily News yesterday.

He said that a sharp drop in water levels in reservoirs and tanks from which the water is being distributed has been experienced due to the extended dry weather over the island.

He noted the situation in the North Central Province has become worse at present due to extreme dry weather.

He requested the public to use water sparingly without watering plants and washing vehicles at this stage.

He said the Board would have no option but to impose a temporary water cut if the dry weather continued.

Meanwhile, the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) said hydro power generation has dropped to 11.7 percent as at present.

The amount of hydro power generation has been 3.58 GWH while the rest of the demand has been met with the operation of thermal power plants. Thermal power generation has been increased up to 88.3 percent.
