Nabbed for trying to smuggle money

A foreigner who attempted to smuggle a stock of foreign currency abroad was arrested at the Katunayaka International Airport on June 12. The foreign currency was worth Rs 17, 16, 000, Police said. The suspect, 45, had tried to go to China. Airport Customs House are investigating.


Probe into girl's mysterious death

Eravur Police have commenced investigations into a death of an 18-year-old girl in Siththandi, Eravur.

Police found Ganeshamurthi Malalamadee's body at Siththandi 3 area on the Murugan Kovil road on Tuesday.

The body was taken to the Mawadiwembu hospital morgue for the post mortem.


Body found

A body was found at the new railway station in Anuradhapura on Tuesday by the Anuradhapura Police following a tip-off.

Police identified the victim as 25-year-old A A Dhanushka Sanjeewa of Wijayapura, Anuradhapura. The Police suspect the person to have been hit by a train. The body was sent to the Anuradhapura general hospital for the post mortem.

Anuradhapura Police are investigating.


Three nabbed with loot

Three people were arrested for stealing goods worth Rs 2 million from a private firm on Monday.

The suspects had broken into the store and driven away in a lorry with a stock of tires, tubes and rubber colours . Police seized some of the stolen goods valued at Rs 1 million.

The suspects were taken into custody at the Danketiya junction on Tangalle - Weeraketiya main road when the Police checked the lorry in which the suspects were travelling with the loot.

The goods and suspects were handed over to the Navagamuwa Police.


Two nabbed for demanding ransom

The Colombo Crime Division (CCD ) arrested two suspects who demanded a ransom of Sterling Pounds 25,000 from two women in Colombo.

Police said the suspects had posed as CCD officers and threatened the two women who lived in government flats in Colombo 4 saying that the women and their daughters would be arrested if they fail to handover the ransom. The suspects were remanded until June 19 after being produced before the Aluthkade magistrate.


Wasp attack

Fourteen estate workers including 11 women and three children were hospitalised after being attacked by wasps at Balmoral estate in Agarapathana on Tuesday.

The injured were plucking tea leaves when they were attacked by wasps. They were admitted to the Agarapathana hospital.


Netted with sandalwood

A person was arrested with 441 kgs of sandalwood at Elabodagama in Kuliyapitiya on Monday.

Police said he was keeping the sandalwood without a permit. He was bailed out when produced before the Kuliyapitiya magistrate.


Nabbed with stolen motorcycles

Two people who allegedly stole five motorcycles were arrested by the Kirindiwela Police on Tuesday.

The suspects from Dehiowita were first arrested with a motorcycle stolen in Kirindiwela.

Further interrogation led the Police to seize the other four motorcycles stolen from Awissawella and Kirindiwela.

Kirindiwela Police are looking for another suspect in connection with the robbery.
