An Ola thatched house at Nithiya veli was gutted by fire when an oil lamp was toppled down by a rat. The burning oil lamp fell on the clothes nearby and ignited the clothes and a thatched Ola curtain. The flames spread and reduced movable properties to ashes. The elders in the house had gone out leaving their two children at home. The neighbours doused the fire.

Animal sacrifice amid protests

Slaughter of goats and fowls as sacrifice to God in Karukampanni Kavanawatte Vyravar Kovil near Keerimalai was performed amid protests by Hindu associations on Saturday. This slaughter euphemistically called Vevi was the scene of blood bath where 375 goats and 400 fowls were killed. The first victim of this massacre was a heavily garlanded goat brought to the temple with drum and music. A butcher armed with a Manna knife specially made for the occasion raised both his hands and with a full breath dealt a deadly blow severing its neck from the body. It fell on the ground wriggling in pain and trauma. The carcass was sold for Rs 150,000.
