Suspect in suicide attempt
A youth who was interrogated by Chavakachcheri Police for several
thefts in Navatkuli and Kaithaddy areas pulled out a sharp blade and cut
his throat to escape from grilling. A constable who saw the attempt of
suicide snatched the blade from the youth and prevented blood spurting
from his throat. He was rushed to Chavakachcheri hospital.
House gutted by fire
An Ola thatched house at Nithiya veli was gutted by fire when an oil
lamp was toppled down by a rat. The burning oil lamp fell on the clothes
nearby and ignited the clothes and a thatched Ola curtain. The flames
spread and reduced movable properties to ashes. The elders in the house
had gone out leaving their two children at home. The neighbours doused
the fire.
Animal sacrifice amid protests
Slaughter of goats and fowls as sacrifice to God in Karukampanni
Kavanawatte Vyravar Kovil near Keerimalai was performed amid protests by
Hindu associations on Saturday. This slaughter euphemistically called
Vevi was the scene of blood bath where 375 goats and 400 fowls were
killed. The first victim of this massacre was a heavily garlanded goat
brought to the temple with drum and music. A butcher armed with a Manna
knife specially made for the occasion raised both his hands and with a
full breath dealt a deadly blow severing its neck from the body. It fell
on the ground wriggling in pain and trauma. The carcass was sold for Rs
150,000. |
