Seaspan Ship Management Officers' Forum
Seaspan Ship Management docked their officers for the Seaspan Ship
Management Officer's Forum 2012 at the Cinnamon Grand last week. The
forum, with the theme of "Managing Risk: Facing challenges together",
was arranged in collaboration with their manning agent, Ceyline Shipping
Ltd.
The two- day multinational affair began with the lighting of a
beautiful human lamp and a drum fusion. The floor was then graced by
guest speakers and delegates from Sri Lanka, India, Cananda, and Ukrain.

The Master of Ceremonies for the forum was Capt. Alfred Gomez, Senior
Training Superintendent at Seaspan Ship Management.
Ceyline Shipping Ltd Managing Director Capt. Nalin Peiris,. delivered
the welcome address stating that eliminating risk is not always an
option but managing risk which can prevent injury, loss of life, achieve
operational efficiency, protect assets to seize opportunities and turn
risk into reward is indeed an option.
Seaspan Fleet Management President Rob Grool speaking on the current
situation within the global shipping industry said that its impact on
manning, and future plans of the company is vital.
He engaged in an open discussion with officers. In his opening
address he cautioned all officers attending that there may be a shortage
of skilled seafarers for now, but the world economy is still on life
support and if Sri Lankan seafarers do not deliver value for money they
will price themselves out of the market. Same as what happened in other
maritime labour supply sources.
Rob Grool made a special address to the families of the seafarers as
well, explaining their role in ensuring that their sea going family
members stay within set regulations in order to return home safely.

General Manager Seaspan Ship Management, Guy Rawlinson, HSEQ Manager at
Seaspan Ship Management and Howard Ford, Accounting Manager at Seaspan
Ship Management. Day one of the forum was followed by a night event
which boasted cocktails and dinner to delegates and guests. Loyalty
awards for officers who had remained with Seaspan for over five years
were presented.
This event greatly helps Sri Lanka at this moment of economic growth
by bringing in a much needed boost for the Sri Lanka's maritime
industry, sea farer community, and prospective entrants to seafaring.
With the participation of 265 international individuals, it also
simultaneously helps the travel and tourism industry as well as the
hospitality industry.

Maritime executives to launch annual conference
Positioned as the new Asian gateway and one of the fastest growing
economies in the world, Sri Lanka's maritime and logistics initiatives
are about to be given another boost from Seatrade's new launch event.
Executives attending the reception at the Colombo Hilton last week
were given an informed presentation by Seatrade executives, as to why
this timely conference that is supported by the Sri Lanka Ports
Authority, will be an important annual fixture in the international
maritime events diary.
John Foreman, Global Head of Marketing for Seatrade Communications,
noted that Sri Lanka looks set to be a major strategic hub for maritime
in the India Ocean and as such will be an ideal venue for the world's
maritime industry to meet and exchange information about the many
commercial opportunities and developments on the Island.
John commented 'Geographically and geo-politically, Sri Lanka is well
placed, located between the fast growing economies of India and China,
and its excellent trade and political relations being mutually
beneficial with both countries. It's this positive growth coupled with
Sri Lanka's unique strategic position that makes investment an even more
attractive proposition for the rest of the world'.
He went on to say 'The aims and objectives of the event, Sri Lanka
Ports, Trade and Logistics, are to bring together the key parties that
will cement this growth and forge new partnerships into the future.
It's about making the country's new infrastructure work as a
comprehensive supply chain and transshipment solution.' Trevor Pereira,
General Manager, Seatrade Communications Middle East agreed with
Foreman's assessment adding 'The Government of Sri Lanka are firmly
behind the development of the Port and Logistics sectors through massive
infrastructure and terminal investment in the country. In the many years
I have been working here, I am impressed by the dynamism and foresight
that the government is showing in propelling Sri Lanka to become one of
the most important maritime hub's in the Indian Ocean'.
IMO Secretary General appointed Chairman of Judging Panel
Seatrade Middle East and Indian subcontinent awards:
The countdown has started as the maritime and shipping industry gears
up for the 9th annual Seatrade Middle East & Indian Subcontinent Awards
held in Dubai.
Hailed as the 'Oscars' of the maritime world, the awards are a
showcase of the who's who in the regional shipping and maritime industry
and pay homage to the many achievements of individuals and companies
over the past year.
Taking place in the luxurious ballroom at the Atlantis the Palm, the
awards will be held on Monday 26th November with more than 750 guests
expected to attend the evening's glittering ceremony.
Once again, a panel of esteemed industry experts has been selected
and Seatrade is honoured that the IMO Secretary General,

Semimizu, has agreed to chair an independent judging panel for the 5
technical and operational categories.
He is joined by David Short, MD, Emirates Marine Services and Vice

Director and Member of the Board of Trustees, Narottam Morarjee

A second judging panel will appraise entries in the 17 commercial
categories and include a prestigious line up of: Mohammed Muallem,
Senior Vice President and MD-UAE Region, DP World; Yudhishthir Khatau,
Vice Chairman and MD, Varun Shipping Company Ltd, President, BIMCO;
Capt. Feisal Ahmed Saad, Manager, Ras Laffan Port Operations; Capt.
Mansoor Yasin Abdul Ghafoor, President, Evergreen Shipping Agency Co.
(UAE) LLC; Sabyasachi Hajara, President, Indian National Shipowners'
Association (INSA) and Chairman and MD, The Shipping Corporation of

Five special awards are also handed out on the night and include:
Shipping Company of the Year; Seatrade Personality of the Year; Seatrade
Young Person of the Year; the Seatrade Outstanding Achievement Award and
the Seatrade Lifetime Achievement Award.

Dikkowita Fishery Harbour upgraded
The boat yard of the Dikkowita Fishery Harbour project is been
upgraded by the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resource Development.
Cey-Nor Foundation Ltd has been entrusted with the project to have a
fully fledged workshop for the Dikkowita Fishery Harbour.
Allied Trading and Enginnering Ltd who is a regular supplier of
geotextile to the Coast Conversation Department supplied geotextile from
Bonar Technical Fabrics of Belgium.
