Earth collapse kills one
One person died and another injured when a mass of earth collapsed on
them while digging gravel in an estate in Ella yesterday. The incident
occurred when four labourers were digging the earth in the Wewalhinna
section of Demodara watte. Of the two admitted to Badulla Hospital, one
succumbed to his injuries.
Ella Police are investigating.
Three nabbed in murder, kidnap case
Police arrested three suspects at Kithulgala who allegedly killed a
driver and hijacked the van on May 21.
Police said D H Piyadasa, 58, a van driver from Kandy had been hired
by the three suspects. Investigations revealed the suspects had taken
the van on the pretext of a hire and murdered the driver and left the
body near a hotel on the Colombo - Hatton Road. The hijacked van was
found at a house in Kurunegala. The suspects were to be produced before
the Magistrate's Court, Ruwanwella . Kithulgala Police are
investigating.
One held for murder of PS member
A man was arrested on Monday by Colombo Crime Division(CCD) in
connection with the murder of a Pradeshiya Sabha member on December 28,
2011. Police revealed Indika Dinesh Chandrasiri, a member of the
Minuwangoda Pradeshiya Sabha was kidnapped at Minuwangoda, taken to
Giriulla and assaulted. Police found his body dumped at Maussawa bridge
at Kotakadeniyawa.
The CCD arrested the suspect at Mihirigama bus stand. Police also
found the vehicle, the suspects used to carry the victim’s body to
Kotakadeniyawa.
Treasure hunters nabbed
Ten persons hunting for treasure in a rocky area near a temple in
Horowpotana were arrested on Monday. Police said they were digging a
land between Weerasogegama and Galahitiya a property owned by the
temple.
They were to be produced in Horowpothana Magistrate's court
yesterday.
Heroin dealers arrested
Two suspects, residents of Wellampitiya were arrested by Sapugaskanda
Police while they were transporting 26.10 milligram of heroin in a three
wheeler at Awariyawatte, Sapugaskanda on Monday.
Police found an electronic weighing machine and cash they have earned
by dealing in drugs. Interrogation led Police to recover another 5.7
grammes at a house in Heyyanthuduwa.
The suspects were to be produced at the Mahara Magistrate's Court
yesterday. |
