Addressing the inaugural ceremony to mark the unit's activation at the
Archaeological Department, Deputy Inspector General (Crimes Range) Ravi
Wijegunawardana said Inspector General of Police N K Illangakoon is
paying special attention to prevent thefts and destruction of artefacts.
He said he has already strengthened the Special Police Unit to
protect archaeological treasure. “The Police Department will do
everything within its power to prevent theft and destruction of antiques
in the country,” he said. Wijegunawardana said the work of the Special
Police Unit is coordinated by Superintendent of Police Saman Rathnayake.
Mythical concepts among some people has led to the destruction of
artefacts during the past, he said. He said Special Police Units have
also been established in each Deputy Inspector General's office in the
provinces.
“Units have been established in the North Central Province, North
Western Province, Sabaragamuwa Province, Eastern Province and Central
Province,” Wijegunawardana said. Archaeological Director General
Senarath Dissanayake said the country's heritage is facing a challenge
due to activities of treasure hunters. The coordinated programme to
prevent such destruction is admirable, he said.
