Nuclear energy for all, atomic weapons for no one - Iran

'Western countries should earn the trust of the Iranian nation':

IRAN: After talks between Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany (P5+1) ended in Baghdad, Tehran insists that nuclear energy should be for all and atomic weapons for no one, Press TV reports.

Speaking on Thursday after the Baghdad negotiations, the Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council and the head of the Iranian delegation to the talks, Saeed Jalili asserted that all nations have the right to enrich uranium under the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). He also reiterated Iran’s right to peaceful nuclear energy.

Iran and the P5+1 group wrapped up their plenary meeting in the Iraqi capital on Thursday evening after a session of negotiations on Wednesday and a second one earlier on Thursday. On the first day of the negotiations, Iran offered a comprehensive package to the P5+1, while a European Union spokesman, Michael Mann told Press TV that the group’s representatives put forward a set of new proposals to Tehran.

Sources close to the Iranian delegation say Iran maintains that its demands, including the lifting of the sanctions imposed on the Islamic Republic, must be met.

Jalili likewise noted that the Western countries should earn the trust of the Iranian nation.

For her part, Catherine Ashton, the EU foreign policy chief and the chief negotiator for the P5+1, which groups Britain, China, France, Russia, and the United States plus Germany, announced that both sides have found common grounds for talks, though significant differences remain.

She further noted that the next round of the talks will be held through a step-by-step approach based on reciprocity.

The next round of the negotiations between the two sides is set to be held in Moscow on June 18 and 19.
