South Western monsoon to bring heavy showers

The Meteorology Department yesterday warned the public of lightning strikes and strong winds with the onset of the South Western monsoon.

According to duty meteorologist Chaminda de Silva, heavy showers can be expected in many parts of Western, Sabaragamuwa and Southern Provinces. He said thundershowers are expected in South and South Western sea areas within the next 24 hours. Wind speeds will be between 30-50 km/h.

"Winds will be from a South-Westerly direction and wind speed will be 30-50 km/h. The speed may increase to 60-70 km/h at times in the South-Western, Southern, South - Eastern and the Gulf of Mannar sea," he added.

"The South-Western, Southern, South-Eastern and Gulf of Mannar sea will be rough at times," he said.
