Sixteen Christian places of worship receive development assistance

Sixteen Christian places of worship received development assistance
to the tune of Rs 11.7 million under the National Programme for
Development of Religious Centres, implemented by the Buddhasasana and
Religious Affairs Ministry under the direction of Prime Minister and
Buddhasasana and Religious Affairs Minister D M Jayaratne yesterday.
The cheques were handed over to the representatives of the 16 places
of Christian worship by acting Buddhasasana and Religious Affairs
Minister M K A D S Gunawardana at a ceremony at the Prime Minister's
official residence Visumpaya. Places of Christian worship which received
the monetary assistance are from Jaffna, Kandy, Puttalam, Anuradhapura,
Batticaloa, Matale and several other areas.
A press release by the Prime Ministers office said Prime Minister D M
Jayaratne as soon as he assumed office as the Buddhasasana and Religious
Affairs Minister took steps to develop centres of worship of all
religious denominations on the directives of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
Under this national programme priority is given to places of worship
damaged due to the conflict. A programme is already underway to develop
Madhu, Talawila, Wahakotte, and Morabedda churches and several other
places of worship drawing a large number of devotees. |
