We must safeguard freedom we won - PM
It is with a great sense of pride that I extend my good wishes to all
Sri Lankans on the occasion of the Victory Day celebrations which is
considered as their new day of independence, states Prime Minister D M
Jayaratne in a Victory Day message.
The message adds: “It will be no exaggeration if each and every Sri
Lankan citizen described the Victory Day which dawned exactly three
years ago as the day they were born anew.
‘I wish to emphasise that the best tribute we can pay to our departed
War Heroes who sacrificed their lives in defence of the nation is to
dedicate ourselves with self sacrifice to safeguard this freedom we
gained as a result of the brave leadership and guidance of President
Mahinda Rajapaksa and the sacrifices made by our heroic Security Forces
and public personnel.
“The ending of terrorist activists led by Prabhakaran who dreamt of
dividing the nation which reminded us about the Buddha’s teaching that
“those who take up arms will be destroyed by arms” also proves that evil
thoughts have no room on Sri Lankan soil”.
“On this Victory Day we wish to remind those who are trying to lay
international traps against Sri Lanka by making false allegations before
the United Nations Human Rights Council that Sri Lanka is an unrelenting
nation whatever forces are arranged against its well-being. We are now
not only free but also not under subjugation to anyone.
“This nation constituted of all communities Sinhala, Tamil, Muslim
and Burgher. I firmly believe that the Sri Lankan nation which was able
to defeat enemy forces also has the strength to win the development war
as well. “I bow my head and pay tribute on behalf of all citizens, and
the government to all those who dedicated themselves towards liberating
the country from Tiger terrorism.” |
