Cigarette smugglers arrested at BIA

Customs officers at the Bandaranaike International Airport yesterday arrested two suspects trying to smuggle 50,000 cigarettes. The suspects were identified as residents of Akkaraipattu in Ampara. When questioned they had acted like pilgrims and had requested permission to leave the airport without having their baggage checked.


Garbage dumper fined

A man who dumped garbage on the middle of the road and littered the pavement was fined Rs 2,500 by the Fort magistrate.

The man was taken into custody by Kollupitiya Police.

Police said the man was nabbed while dumping garbage at St Michael's junction.


Dharmasoka centenary celebration

An all night pirith chanting will be held on May 12 and an alms giving to 100 bhikkus on May 13, organised by the Dharmasoka College Centenary Commemorative Organisation to mark the centenary commemoration of the school in 2013.

A series of programmes will also be held.

All principals, teachers and students, past and present, parents and well-wishers are invited.


Pinkama

A pinkama organised by the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation to mark its 50th anniversary will be held at the Ruwanmeli Seya premises, Anuradhapura on May 11 and 12.

It will include an all night Pirith ceremony on May 11 and a Sanghika dana to 50 bhikkhus on May 12.

Petroleum Industries Minister Susil Premajayantha, Deputy Minister Sarana Gunawardena and the chairman and Board of Directors and other staff of the CPC will participate.


Felicitation ceremony

The Retired Teachers' Association of Devi Balika Vidyalaya, Colombo 8 will felicitate the second principal of the school, Kalyani de Zoysa on May 11 at 4.30 p.m. at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute, Colombo 7.


Vesak Dhamma sermon

A Vesak Dhamma sermon organised by the residents of Thalgahawatte Mawatha, Boralesgamuwa will be held tomorrow at 7pm at 28301, Thalgahawatte. Ven Agalawatte Gnawimala Thera , lecturer at the Pali and Buddhist Department of Sri Jayawardenapura University will deliver the Dhamma sermon.


Praise and worship service

An exclusive service of 'Praise and Worship' open to all, will be held on May 13 at 10.30am at the Cathedral of Christ the Living Saviour, Bauddhaloka Mawatha, adjoining the BMICH, Colombo 7.

The speaker and minister at this service will be Vijaya Corea who will interpret current events, taking into consideration the recent threat of the tsunami, earthquakes, economic instability and worldwide conflicts.
