Q: How has 2012 been so far?

A: The year 2012 is not that good; investors are a bit reluctant to invest in the market and the entire market outlook is quite gloomy.

It is true that government infrastructure development projects and several tourism industry related investments are taking place , but overall, other developments seem to be not happening. The depreciation of the Sri Lankan rupee has badly affected most companies, as far as DPJH is concerned, we have almost experienced Rs 38 million exchange loss.

We saw a real growth of the market during 2010 and 2011 with the end of the war. This year, we have started to feel something shaky, and hopefully expects it will work out towards the end of this year or middle of next year.

However, we focus more on strengthening the quality of our products we give to the market and as well as to maintain our dominance in the areas that we are currently present specially in labels, time track, solution sectors.

In addition, we have increased the exiting capacities of Barcode and Label Printers Pvt Ltd . In 2011, the company invested $ 1.6 million by adding 300 percent additional capacity to the factory. We also managed to add online printing capabilities, variable date printing capabilities, to the factory.

Q: What is your involvement with the Tourism sector, what plans do you have for the sector?

A: DPJH has several of its own boutique hotels under the “Go Leisure brand” , however, at the moment, these properties have been rented out to various other companies.DPJH wishes to expand its presence into the Marine Tourism Sector , Water Sports Tourism, this area has a huge potential, but Sri Lanka doesn’t have proper infrastructure and facilities to attract tourists.

We have already embarked on a Water Sports Complex in Kalutara, at a cost of Rs 75 million, which will cater to the domestic and international tourists. We are currently doing the environmental assessment of the project.

Q: If we move on to the Tourism Industry , what do you think are the challenges and suggestions you have for the betterment of the industry?

A: The biggest problem we are facing is that we have not communicated properly to the world. We are trying to increase our capacity in the hotel field, but I feel increasing the capacities in this field is not enough, we got to market Sri Lanka as a tourist hub by using our media, facebook, Twitter.

Q: Since the launch of Tabz store located at Bambalapitiya, how has the customer response been? What are the future plans you have for this sector?

A: Recently, we launched the finest tablet gallery in Sri Lanka in a bid to satisfy ‘Tech Savvy Customer's needs, the latest technologies that will take them to the height of innovation. Customer response has been quite good.

This is the only place where customers are able to come and experience our services. Customers will have to experience the world leading brands, innovative products such as Apple iPads and iPhones, Motorola Razr Phones and Xoom Tablets, and latest other brand tabs from Sony, Toshiba and ZTE, GPS Navigation Units are gaming consoles such as X Box, PS3s, Nintendo, 3Ds and Nintendo Wii and more.

At the moment, we have plans to establish more Tabz showrooms across the island and are doing the feasibility studies to put up branches in Jaffna, Kandy and Galle as initial stages of the project.
