Bus service from Colombo to Point Pedro

A day time bus service to Colombo from Point Pedro was inaugurated on Monday on the instructions of the Sri Lanka Transport Board General Manager. A bus will leave Point Pedro at 5 am and ply along the coastal Puttalam-Chilaw road and reach the Colombo bus stand. The bus will carry passengers to Ratmalana from the Colombo bus stand. A bus to Jaffna will leave the Colombo bus stand daily at 8.30 am and ply via Puttalam to Jaffna. Jaffna passengers can book their tickets at the Point Pedro bus depot.


Grama Niladhari clubbed

Eluthumaduval North Grama Niladhari K. Gnaneshwaran, 46, has been assaulted with clubs by four unidentified persons. He was admitted to the Jaffna Teaching hospital.


Chain snatcher on motorbike

A motorcyclist who followed a pre-school teacher at Nallur, snatched her three sovereign gold chain and escaped on Monday morning.


Massage clinics banned in Jaffna

A resolution was passed by the Jaffna Municipal Council banning massage clinics in the Jaffna municipal area. They would be a source of social and cultural degeneration in Jaffna, councillors said. It was highlighted at the meeting that a massage clinic has been functioning without permission .


Power for Maruthapuram

Electricity was supplied to the Maruthapuram area in Karainagar under the Northern Spring Programme. Traditional Industries and Small Industries Develo- pment Minister Douglas Devananda and Karainagar Pradeshiya Sabha Opposition Leader Kannan inaugurated the electricity scheme.


Jaffna varsity Eng, Agri faculties to commence soon

The Engineering and Agriculture Faculties of the Jaffna University will commence soon at Ariviyal Nagar in Kilinochchi.

A discussion was held at the Kilinochchi Secretariat in this regard.

New buildings will be constructed in 500 acres at Ariviyal Nagarand and existing buildings will be rehabilitated. The Higher Education Ministry has allocated Rs 400 million. and the Indian government will provide Rs 500 million for this. Ministers Douglas Devananda and S B Dissanayake inspected the buildings at Ariviyal Nagar.

M Chandrakumar MP, Indian High Commissioner Ashok K Kanth, Jaffna Municipal Councillor Mahalingham, Jaffna University Vice Chancellor Prof. Vasanth Arasaratnam also participated in the discussion.


New bus service

A bus service from Point Pedro to Nagar Kovil commenced after 30 years. Two buses will ply from Point Pedro to Nagar Kovil daily at 7 a.m. and 12 noon.

A bus will leave Nagar Kovil to Point Pedro daily at 8.15 a.m. and 2.15 p.m. Nagar Kovil was devastated during the war.

The Point Pedro depot has started a bus service from Velvetithurai to Trincomalee from May 7.

A bus leaves for Trincomalee at 3.45 a.m. and passes through Point Pedro, Nelliyaddy and Kodikamam to Trincomalee.
