* PHIs inspect 7,112 dansal islandwide

* Only 5,123 dansal registered

The Public Health Inspectors’ (PHI) Association had inspected a large number of dansal islandwide during the Vesak season and had banned several due to their unclean surroundings and serving food of questionable quality, PHI Association chairman Upul Rohana said.

According to the chairman, PHIs inspected 7,112 dansal islandwide.

They reported that food served in 192 such dansal were not suitable for consumption with even the risk of food poisoning to their patrons.

The Health Ministry had informed the public willing to hold dansal in the Vesak season to register with the Provincial Councils to ensure clean food is served at the dansal.

However, only 5,123 dansal registered following Health Ministry instructions while the other 1,989 had failed to do so. The 192 sub-standard dansal organisers were warned by the PHI Association during inspections.

In addition, 37 dansal were ordered to destroy their food due to the food being unfit for human consumption, Rohana said.
