The Police Department has set up a special police post at the
National Museum premises. This measure had been taken following the
recent break-in at the National Museum, Police Media spokesman SSP Ajith
Roahana said. According to museum authorities, the burglars had stolen
gold plated swords, gold coins, silver coins, a jewelled gold ring,
gem-encrusted walking stick, gold waist belt and a silver sword among
other artifacts.
The police post has been set up as part of measures taken by the
authorities to prevent another break-in at the museum. According to the
Police Media Unit, 16 police officers have been deployed to this newly
built police post. The police post set up on the instructions of Western
Province DIG Anura Senanayake will function under the Cinnamon Gardens
Police.
The CCTV system that was malfunctioning at the time of the theft has
been repaired and a new state-of-the-art alarm and a new CCTV system has
also been installed. Investigations into the theft are continuing.
