Praises for Percy

The ever green one man cheer leader of Sri Lanka cricket, Percy Abayasekera who has been doing his thing eve before Sri Lanka attained Test status and even after being admitted a full member in 1981, was once again in action when England toured here, recently.

Abaysekera has come in for high praise from many international cricketers for following the Lanka cricketers here and abroad and encouraging them with his loyalty and cheering.

In the past Percy had Lionel 'the legend' and for support. But now Percy goes alone as a one man cheer squad.

Speaking to the 'Daily News' Percy said that he is now over 75 years of age, but will continue to show his loyalty to Sri Lanka cricket and encourage it to even greater heights, even if is with a walking stick. Such is his keenness.

When England toured here recently, he met with some of the former England cricketers who were here and while exchanging pleasantries, got talking of old times and among other things the changes taking place in the game now.

Three of the former England greats he was happy to meet were Derek Underwood, Allan Lamb and Gladstone Small who were here as tourists following the England team.

All three praised Percy for his services to cricket and Underwood wrote - 'Thanks for your fine commentary and entertainment. You should be an advisor to Sri Lanka Cricket. You haven't changed at all since 1982. I think you are more wiser. We look forward to visit Sri Lanka again. From us at ITC and from UK, keep enjoying your cricket and good health and luck in the future'.

Allan Lamb: 'The best and greatest Sri Lanka supporter. Keep attacking'.

Gladstone Small: 'Always great to see you cheering your lads.Keep it up. Best wishes'.

Gareth Jones: ' All the best. A great time in Sri Lanka'.

Others tourists who showered praise on Percy were - Sean and James: 'As ever, you have kept us wonderfully entertained'.

Tony and Angela: 'It has been a pleasure to meet you. Hope to see you again whether it is in England or Sri Lanka. If it is England we will show you some real entertainment and take you to watch Bolton Wanderers Football Club. Good luck and God bless'.
