Youth housing project second phase launched

The second phase of the Youth Housing Project sponsored by the
National Youth Services Council and the Youth Affairs Ministry was
launched at Illukgoda, Mawanella recently.
The programme aims to build 334 houses for youths in different parts
of the country. The function was graced by Youth Affairs and Skills
Development Minister Dullas Alahapperuma, Senior Minister Athauda
Seneviratne.
Fake magistrate caught

Hanwella Police arrested a man who posed as a magistrate recently.
Investigations revealed that he had posed as a university professor,
a politician as well as a VIP on several occasions and had misled the
public. He is a resident of Kalubowila. Police found forged documents,
rubber stamps and a few SIM cards in his possession.
Dharmadasa, Singapore’s Honorary Consul-General
The Singapore government has appointed Jayantha Dharmadasa as
Singapore’s Honorary Consul-General in Colombo with jurisdiction over
Sri Lanka.
Dharmadasa is the chairman and chief executive officer of Nawaloka
Hospitals PLC and also the chairman of Nawaloka Holdings (Pvt) Ltd.
Nawaloka Holdings has commercial interest that span across health care,
manufacturing, construction and aviation. Dharmadasa was the chairman of
Sri Lanka Cricket Board from 2005 to 2007 and Asian Cricket Council
president from 2006 to 2007.
Aquatic plants block creek free flow

The Kumbukkan oya, a local creek flowing through the Lunugala area is
currently full of aquatic plants which are blocking the free flow of the
waters.
On days of heavy rainfall, the creek overflows and floods the fields
in and around the Lunugala area causing much destruction. Local farmers
urge the authorities concerned to take action to clear it effectively
without delay as they are thoroughly affected.
Welding material thief arrested

The Ambalangoda Police arrested a person who had stolen welding
material and equipment from an iron works centre in Madampagama in
Ambalangoda, along with some of the materials. The Police said that the
value of the stolen materials was about Rs. 25,000. The suspect was
produced before Asanka Boderagama the Balapitiya magistrate, who
remanded him until May 2. The Ambalangoda police is continuing further
investigations.
Bak Maha Ulela
The Bak Maha Ulela organised by the Youth Affairs and Skills
Development Ministry will be held today from 8.30am at the Youth
Services Council Ground, Maharagama.
Youth Affairs and Skills Development Minister Dullas Alahapperuma and
Deputy Minister Duminda Dissanayake will be the chief guests.
Among the highlights will be traditional games including the Avurudu
Kumari contest, pillow contest, etc.
A musical show will be held at the end of the event.
WASLAM meeting
The first biennial general meeting of the Women's Association of Sri
Lanka Malays (WASLAM) will be held today at 3.30pm at the Sasakawa
Memorial Sri Lanka Japan Cultural Centre, Colombo 3.
It will be held under the patronage of Southern Province Governor
Kumari Balasuriya.
New Year festival
The Sinhala and Tamil New Year organised by P E Mathew and Company of
Colombo will be held at the Wadduwa Holiday Resort.
Death of Gerty Jayawardena
The vice Principal of the Carlton pre-school group, Gerty Jayawardena
passed away after a brief illness. Her husband Jayasena Jayawardena
pre-deceased her. Her remains are lying at her residence in Beliatta and
the funeral will take place today at 3.00 pm at the Tangalle General
Cemetery. |
