Over Rs 4.5 m worth cigarettes seized

Customs officers at the Bandaranaike International Airport yesterday detected 820 cartons of cigarettes in the possession of three passengers who came from Dubai.

According to Customs sources, the seized cigarettes are valued at over Rs 4.5 million. Customs officials had checked the three passengers( a male and two females) on suspicion. The cartons of cigarettes were concealed in large travelling bags.


Peaceful New Year in Kurunegala

Kurunegala town and the suburban areas celebrated the New Year sans major incidents related to alcohol and drugs, according to the Kurunegala police.

The Kurunegala Police Narcotics Bureau had conducted raids in several locations in rural villages of Morathiha, Walpola-Kanda and Gettuwana. All bars in Kurunegala were closed on April 14 and 15 according to government regulation.


Sri Lanka - Japan Nite

The 'Sri Lanka - Japan Nite' organised by the JICA Alumni Association of Sri Lanka to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and Japan will be held on April 28 from 7 pm at the Grand Oriental Hotel, Colombo 1. Japanese ambassador to Sri Lanka Nobuhito Hobo and Tomomi Hobo will be the Chief Guests while JICA Sri Lanka Office Chief Representative Marumi Ao will be the Guest of Honour. The dinner dance will be preceded by a cultural show.


Foetus found in lavatory

Police found a male foetus in a lavatory pan in a private garment factory in Kaduruwana on Monday.

Morawaka district medical officer submitted a report to the Morawaka Magistrate's Court. Police arrested a woman in this connection and produced her before the Morawaka Magistrate's Court yesterday.


Death of R.A.D. Leelawathie

The death occurred of R.A.D. Leelawathie, 85, mother of Narahenpita Police Hospital OIC Chief Inspector Chitrananda Jayakody. The body is laying at 361 Munamalgahawatte, Polhena, Kelaniya. The funeral will take place at the Kelaniya Pilapitiya Public Cemetery tomorrow at 3 pm.
