Vehicle unloading at Magampura Port from May

Motor vehicle unloading will commence from the Magampura Mahinda Rajapaksa Port by the end of May, Ports and Highways Deputy Minister Rohitha Abeygunawardena said. He said arrangements are being made at the Magampura port in this regard.

“More facilities for vehicle handling will be available at the Magampura port. The latest technology will also be used at the harbour for vehicle handling,” the deputy minister said. Abeygunawardena said over 90 percent of vehicle importers have agreed to this arrangement.

He said vehicle imports through the Magampura port will become more meaningful as vehicles can easily be distributed to various parts of the country from the Magampura port.

“Vehicle distribution from Hambantota is rather cost effective since the Hambantota road network is less congested than the Colombo road network. However, certain groups are misleading the masses about this arrangement pointing out that vehicle unloading at Magampura ports is costly,” Abeygunawardena said. The deputy minister said 90 percent of vehicle importers have agreed to unload vehicles at the Magampura Mahinda Rajapaksa Port.
