Rs 50 million has been allocated to set up a supermarket complex in
Tissamaharama, said Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa.
He was addressing a meeting that followed the opening of a fisheries
retail outlet in Debarawewa, Tissamaharama. He said it was to be set up
several years ago, but was delayed due to various reasons.
He said President Mahinda Rajapaksa who was the then fisheries
minister provided the fisher community houses with tiled roofs and
cemented floors.
George Rajapaksa was also a fisheries minister who served the fisher
community to their utmost satisfaction, he said.
"The newly opened retail outlet will provide consumers with fresh
fish at reasonable prices. Low income families will be the
beneficiaries," the Speaker said.
A large amount of money is being drained to foreign countries in the
form of foreign exchange to import canned fish, he said.
