Battle of Nilwala ends in draw

The 112th big match between St Servatius College and St Thomas's colleges ended in a draw at the Uyanwatta stadium Matara last Sunday. St Servatius, given a victory target of 200 to be scored in 29 overs, were 143 for 4 at close of play. A number of dropped catches deprived St Servatius from forcing a decision.

St Thomas' were all out for 194 after being asked to bat first. The Thomians recovered from a precarious score of 6 for 57 thanks to skipper Ashan Ranasingha 57 and Hashan Vimarshana 76 who put on 121 runs for the seventh wicket. Right arm off spinner Ashen Deemantha and Left arm leg spinner Pamal Dhananjaya took three wickets each. St Servatius declared their first innings at 149 for nine wickets after 63.5 overs.

They too were in a precarious position with five wickets down for 44 runs and were saved by a defiant 60 by skipper Sanidu Ediriweera. Right arm off spinner Ashan Ranasingha took his 100th wicket for the season when he had Kasun Rajitha caught by Rasika Damith. Ashan has a unique achievement of scoring 1000 runs and capturing 100 wickets this season.

The Thomians declared their second innings at tea with the score at 154/7. Lasith Lakshan scored 42 while Ashan Ranasingha was unbeaten on 32. Pamal Dhananjaya took six wickets for 66 runs to end with a match bag of 9/97. Being set a victory target of 200 to be scored in 29 overs St Servatius managed only 143 for 4. Yohan Chanuka scored 52 runs.

St Servatius: 149 for 9 (Sanidu Ediriweera 60, Sameera Gunasekera 23, Hashan Vimarshana 2 for 33, Ashan Ranasingha 3 for 31, Jayanga de Silva 3 for 14) and 143 for 4 (Thushan Eranga 30, Yohan Chanuka 52, Sanjika Ridma 29, Ruchira Jayathunga 21 n.o., Ishan Abeysekera 3 for 13)
