'SL needs strong economy to face challenges'

Sri Lanka has strength and courage to manage and overcome any
challenge posed by the world community. The country has to build a
strong economy to face challenges, Traditional Industries and Small
Enterprise Development Deputy Minister Weerakumara Dissanayake said.
He was addressing a meeting after handing over appointment letters to
traditional craftsmen and craftswomen as teacher trainers at the Jana
Kala Kendraya Battaramulla yesterday.
The cerenony was held under the patronage of Traditional Industries
and Small Development Enterprise Minister Douglas Devananda.
The National Craft Council has selected 78 craftsmen and women as
instructors in traditional handicrafts.
The country needs to increase national product to achieve development
targets. The government will carry forward infrastructure facilities and
other development programmes without giving in to any challenge, he
said. The ministry has drawn up plans to develop the handicrafts sector
to provide quality items to the world market.
The global market is extending in many ways with the development of
tourism, he said. Ministry Secretary V Shivaghanasothi, National Craft
Council Chairman Budhi Keerthisena, and Deputy Director Chandramali
Liyanage also spoke.
